50 Years of Low Back Pain Did Not Have to be the End of the Story
One Veteran came to Carlson Chiropractic after living with low back pain for roughly 50 years. His daily pain had reached 8 out of 10. He had already tried other chiropractors, physical therapy, and medications — and kept going. After 3 months of chiropractic adjustments with our team, he reported his pain had dropped to a 2 out of 10, and he was back to doing military exercises he thought were behind him for good. Every case is different. But long-standing pain is still worth evaluating.

Frequently Asked Questions About VA Chiropractic Care at Carlson
VA chiropractic care works differently than private insurance. These are the questions Veterans ask us most.
Does the VA cover chiropractic care?
Yes. Chiropractic services are part of the VA Medical Benefits Package for eligible Veterans. Like other specialty services, VA chiropractic care generally begins with a referral from a VA primary care or specialty provider. Depending on your location and eligibility, care may be provided at a VA facility or through VA Community Care.
Can I use my VA benefits for chiropractic care at Carlson Chiropractic Center?
If VA authorizes you to receive community chiropractic care with Carlson Chiropractic Center, we can provide the care included in that authorization. Carlson Chiropractic works with VA Community Care referrals and helps Veterans with the administrative steps related to their approved care. VA must approve the referral and authorization before VA-covered community care begins.
Do I need a referral from the VA?
Yes, if you want VA to cover your chiropractic care. Before seeing a non-VA provider through Community Care, your VA health care team must approve the referral. This is different from many private insurance plans, where patients may be able to schedule chiropractic care directly.
Can I ask the VA to send my chiropractic referral to Carlson Chiropractic Center?
Yes. You can tell your VA health care team that Carlson Chiropractic Center is your preferred community provider. VA will determine whether you are eligible for Community Care and whether the requested provider can be used for your authorization.
What should I say to my VA provider if I want chiropractic care?
Keep it simple. You can say: “I would like to be evaluated for chiropractic care. If I am eligible for Community Care, I would prefer Carlson Chiropractic Center in Joplin.” Your VA provider can decide whether a chiropractic referral is appropriate and begin the Community Care process when applicable.
How does the VA Community Care referral process work?
The process usually begins with your VA health care team creating a referral. VA reviews your eligibility, prepares the referral, and helps confirm the community provider. VA issues an authorization letter that explains the approved provider, services, authorization number, and how long the authorization is valid. VA notes that preparing the referral can take up to 14 days in some cases. Once a referral is sent to us, an appointment can be made.
Can I schedule at Carlson Chiropractic before I have VA authorization?
You may call us with questions, but VA-covered Community Care should not begin until your referral and authorization are in place. VA states that care with a community provider must be approved before the appointment. If you are unsure whether your authorization is ready, our team can help you identify what information to confirm with VA.
What is a VA authorization letter, and why is it important?
Your authorization letter is VA’s approval for Community Care. It lists your authorization number, the approved community provider, the type of care VA has approved, and how long you can receive that care without another referral. It is important because VA will not cover services outside the scope of the authorization.
Does Carlson Chiropractic help with VA paperwork?
Yes. Once your referral and authorization are in place, our team helps with the paperwork and communication connected to your authorized care. That can include receiving authorization information, coordinating records, submitting claims, and working through requests for additional authorized care when appropriate. VA still makes the final decisions about eligibility, approval, and coverage.
What happens at my first chiropractic appointment?
Your first visit is thorough. We review your health history, talk about where you hurt and how it affects your daily life, and perform an examination that may include posture, range of motion, orthopedic, and neurological testing. X-rays may be recommended when clinically appropriate. We want to understand the whole picture before making recommendations.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Just your photo ID. We will receive most, if not all, important information from the VA Office of Community Care.
What types of problems do you commonly evaluate in Veterans?
Veterans come to us with many of the same musculoskeletal concerns we see every day, including low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc-related pain, stiffness, headaches, numbness or tingling, arthritis-related discomfort, and old injuries that continue to affect movement or daily activities. Every Veteran receives an individual evaluation because the cause and severity of symptoms can be very different from one person to another.
What if I have been living with back or neck pain for years?
Long-standing pain does not automatically mean nothing can be done. We have seen people who had slowly adjusted their lives around pain for years because they assumed it was simply something they had to live with.
A thorough evaluation can help determine what is contributing to your symptoms, what conservative options may be appropriate, and whether chiropractic care is a reasonable part of your plan.
I've already tried medication, physical therapy, injections, or other chiropractic care. Is it still worth being evaluated?
It may be. Previous treatment that did not give you the result you hoped for does not always mean every conservative option has been exhausted. Our doctors look at your history, current symptoms, examination findings, imaging when appropriate, and your goals. If we believe another type of care would be a better fit, we will tell you and refer when needed.
Can chiropractic care help with sciatica, bulging discs, or herniated discs?
These are common reasons people seek care at Carlson Chiropractic Center. Symptoms can include low back pain, pain traveling into the hip or leg, numbness, tingling, weakness, or difficulty sitting, standing, or walking comfortably. Our doctors evaluate the cause of the symptoms and may recommend chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitative care, or other conservative therapies when appropriate.
Is spinal decompression therapy covered by the VA?
No. Spinal decompression therapy is not a standard covered service under most VA authorizations. If it is clinically recommended during your care, our team will review the authorization and help coordinate with VA when additional approval may be needed.
How many chiropractic visits will the VA approve?
There is not one set number for every Veteran. Your authorization tells you what care has been approved and how long it is valid. If VA approves ongoing care, you can schedule follow-up visits directly with the authorized provider, but it is important to stay within the limits of the authorization.
What happens if I need more care than my original authorization allows?
If additional care is clinically appropriate, you or the community provider can request another referral or authorization. VA reviews the request and decides whether more care will be approved. Our team can help with the provider-side paperwork when an additional request is needed.
Will I have to pay anything out of pocket for VA Community Care?
Your cost depends on your VA eligibility, service-connected disability rating, priority group, and the type of care you receive. Some Veterans do not owe an outpatient copay, while others may receive a copay bill from VA. For authorized Community Care, the community provider should not collect a VA copay directly from you. VA handles applicable VA copays separately. Most patients pay only a one-time fee of $45 for our radiologist to read X-rays if it is necessary to take them.
What is my first step if I want to see Carlson Chiropractic through the VA?
Start with your VA health care team. Ask for a chiropractic referral and, if you qualify for Community Care, request Carlson Chiropractic Center in Joplin as your preferred provider. We will notify you when we receive the authorization and help make the rest of the process as simple as possible.

Important Information About VA Community Care
VA chiropractic care works differently from private insurance. Veterans who wish to receive VA-covered chiropractic care at a community provider must first obtain a referral from their VA health care team and receive an authorization before care begins. The VA determines Community Care eligibility, the approved provider, covered services, and the length of the authorization. Carlson Chiropractic Center does not determine or guarantee VA approval, authorization scope, or the number of visits approved. VA copay rules vary by Veteran status. For current copay information, contact your VA health care team or visit VA.gov.
